Ever got tangled in a wiry mess right before making that winning move in your favorite game due to your headphones? The good news is that wired headphones are a thing of the past! Say hello to Apple AirPods! How to connect AirPods to PS4? Let’s find out.
But we’re going to have a problem here!
AirPods are not supported natively on the PS4!
This, however, can be remedied in several ways. In this article, we’ll explain how to connect AirPods to PS4. Also, which accessories do you need to buy, and what features aren’t supported.
Equipment Required to Connect Your AirPods to PS4
The PS4 does not support Bluetooth audio out of the box. That means you won’t be able to use AirPods or any other Bluetooth headphones without purchasing additional equipment. Therefore, you’ll need to get a PS4 Bluetooth adaptor to support Bluetooth audio and plug it into the console.
We chose the Twelve South AirFly Duo for this article, but any Bluetooth adapter supporting audio and connecting to a PS4 (through USB or the headphone connector, for example) will work.
How to Connect AirPods Using Bluetooth Adapter
To connect AirPods to a PS4 using a Bluetooth adaptor, follow these steps:
Step 1:
Make sure your AirPods are fully charged.
Step 2:
Connect the Bluetooth adapter to the PS4.
Step 3:
Put the Bluetooth adapter into pairing mode. Your device’s specific instructions will tell you how to achieve this.
Step 4:
Open the charging case of your AirPods, and press and hold the syncing button.
Step 5:
Hold the button down until the Bluetooth adapter’s lights stop blinking. This indicates that the AirPods have been connected to the adapter.
Step 6:
Check the settings on your PS4 to ensure that your PS4 is being delivered to your AirPods.
For this, go to “Settings > Devices > Audio Devices.”
Step 7:
On the “Audio Devices” screens, there are two critical settings to change:
- Output Device: Set it to “Headphones Connected to Controller” (or whatever menu your Bluetooth adaptor requires).
- Output to Headphones: Set to “All Audio.”
In the Volume Control (Headphones) menu, you may also adjust the volume of audio sent from the PS4 to your AirPods.

Step 8:
After that, all PS4 audio will play through your AirPods, and you’re ready to play!
Even though AirPods have a microphone, there is one drawback to this method: You can’t talk to other gamers you’re playing with (as anyone who has used them for phone calls knows). Because most Bluetooth adapters only deliver audio from your PS4 to your headphones and not the other way around. You’ll need headphones designed exclusively for PS4 for this.
Still, if all you want to do is listen to audio without disturbing others, a Bluetooth adaptor is an excellent choice.
How to Connect AirPods Without Bluetooth Adapter
You can also connect your AirPods to your PS4 without using a Bluetooth adapter. This will, however, necessitate the use of an Android or iOS smartphone.
This solution will allow you to play PlayStation games on your smartphone, allowing you to use your AirPods as headphones.
Let’s have a look at the steps in this technique.
Step 1:
Firstly, turn on your PS4 and sign in to your PlayStation Network account.
Step 2:
Before moving forward, open your smartphone and then the app store and download the PS4 Remote Play App.
Step 3:
Accept all of the Terms and Conditions and then log in to your PlayStation Network account on the app.
Step 4:
Next, your smartphone will begin searching for your PS4. Be patient; this procedure may take a few minutes to finish.
Step 5:
Once connected, you’ll be able to link your controller to your smartphone.
To do so, navigate to your smartphone’s “Settings > Bluetooth.” Then, on your controller, hit the share and PS buttons.
This will activate sharing mode on your controller. Once you’ve done that, your controller will appear on your smartphone’s list of available devices to pair with. Choose it from the list, and your smartphone will connect to your controller.
Step 6:
The rest is simple! Once you’ve connected your controller to your smartphone, your AirPods will be connected to your smartphone as usual. This can be done using your smartphone’s Bluetooth menu, or if you have a newer iPhone, the AirPods will automatically connect to it whenever you open their case.
After you’ve completed all of this, you may return to the PS Remote Play and begin playing any game you want.
Final Words
Apple AirPods are a convenient and effective wireless audio solution that works with a wide range of Bluetooth-enabled devices. When trying to connect them to a PS4 or PS4 Pro, however, there comes the problem. Luckily, there are ways to connect AirPods to PS4, with and without a Bluetooth adapter, which we have discussed above.
