For many people, images are the most valuable data on their iPhones, and losing them may be disastrous. The good news is that you can recover your images in Apple Devices even if you mistakenly delete some (or all) of them. So if you’ve accidentally deleted a treasured photo, do not panic!

We will discuss how to recover deleted photos from iPhone via:

  • Recently deleted folder
  • iCloud backup
  • iTunes backup
  • macOS Finder

Recover Photos from the Recently Deleted folder

In the Photos app, Apple includes a “recently deleted” folder, which functions similarly to the Recycle Bin on your computer. It stores all deleted photos for 30 days.

A recently deleted photo is completely erased on day 31. Although it’s easy to recover it till then, here are the steps to do so:

Step 1

On your iPhone, go to “Photos > Recently Deleted.

Step 2

At the top-right of the screen, tap “Select. Now select all of the photos you want to restore and click on “Recover.”

Click on ‘Recover’ to return your photos to your Photos album

Step 3

After selecting, tap ‘Recover’ on the lower-right of the screen. Moreover, if you wish to recover all photos, tap ‘Recover all’ instead.

Recover Photos Through iCloud Backup

If your images have already vanished from the Recently Deleted folder, you might still be able to recover them by restoring your phone from a backup.

The disadvantage of this strategy is that all of your deleted stuff — apps, data, text messages, and so on — will be restored from iCloud Drive using an older backup, which you may not want to do. However, if the backup you wish to restore is current, it can be worthwhile.

Here’s how to recover deleted images from iCloud:

Step 1: Backup your phone to iCloud

Go to “Settings > Your Apple ID > iCloud > iCloud Backup” and turn the toggle on.

Step 2: Perform a Factory Reset

Go to “Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings” to factory reset your phone.

Step 3: Restore

Now go to “Apps and Data” and click on “Restore from iCloud Backup.”

Make sure to select the backup version that includes all the photos that you have lost.

Suppose the older backup has the photos you want, but the remainder of the older version isn’t to your liking. In that case, you can email the photos to yourself or upload them to an external cloud service (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.) and then restore your phone to the newer version.

Recover Photos From iTunes Backup

If you’re using iTunes to backup your phone, the process is pretty simple. Here are the steps for it:

Step 1

Connect your iPhone to Mac running macOS Mojave or older, or iPhone to PC, and then click the iPhone icon in the iTunes window’s upper-left corner.

Step 2

In the left-hand window, select the “Summary tab.” Now, select ‘Restore Backup‘ in the Backups section.

Click the Restore Backup button to return to a previous version when your files weren’t deleted

Step 3

Select the backup to which you wish to restore your phone.

Step 4

Check the Photos app after the restore is finished to see if the lost photos have been recovered. If not, repeat the process and restore from a previous backup or go back to the most recent backup.

Recover Photos Using Finder in macOS

Another way to restore deleted photos from iPhone is by using Finder in macOS with the following steps:

Step 1

Open the Finder on your Mac running macOS Catalina 10.15 or later.

Step 2

Connect your iPhone to Mac. When your device appears in the left-hand menu, click it.

Step 3

Select “Restore Backup… Choose the backup date you want to use.

Step 4

Lastly, select ‘Restore.’

And that’s how you can recover deleted photos from your iPhone with a few simple steps.

But what if your photos are permanently deleted?

Can you recover permanently deleted photos from an iPhone?

The answer to this question depends on how often you backup your phone.

If your photos are saved in iCloud or if you have a backup from which you can recover your photo, you may be able to retrieve irreversibly lost images. But if there’s no backup, unfortunately, you won’t recover the permanently deleted photos!
