Are you wondering if the iPhone is waterproof?

We all know iPhones are considered to be one of the most sophisticated smartphones available today.

Water-resistant, water-proof, splash-proof, and moisture-resistant…it can be hard to understand what true capabilities your iPhone has.

In this article, we are going to answer if the iPhone is waterproof or not. You’ll find out the water-resistant capabilities of iPhone models from series 7 to the most latest available in the market.

Is the iPhone waterproof?

Is the iPhone waterproof? No, it’s not waterproof and you won’t come across any smartphone that is completely waterproof. But, the iPhone is “water-resistant.”

Apple says that it’s iPhone 7 and newer iPhones are splash-, water- and dust-resistant, which means they’re usually fine in the rain or other “incidental” exposure to water.

All Apple products are tested to a specific set of standards before they are allowed to carry the “water-resistant” label. And Apple makes it clear that even if you follow all precautions, there’s still a chance your device could be damaged if exposed to liquid.

Still, if you’re careful about what you do with your iPhone 7 and newer versions, it will most likely survive an accidental dunking this holiday season.

Below is the table to help you identify the IP ratings of different models of iPhone:

Is the iPhone 7 waterproof?

iPhone 7

You know that Apple has a reputation for making sleek, high-quality products, but “is the iPhone 7 waterproof?” The short answer is no if you’re talking about the iPhone 7 specifically.

However, it does have a better “water resistance” rating than earlier models and can handle some exposure to moisture, so it’s not quite as fragile as you might think.

When Apple launched the iPhone 7 series, it was given an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance. This rating means that the iPhone 7 could be submerged in up to a meter of water for up to 30 minutes.

The IP rating system is used to determine how resistant a device is to water. It’s not a matter of “if” a device will be waterproof, it’s a matter of “how much.” For example, an IP67-rated device like the iPhone 7 can withstand up to one meter of water for 30 minutes.

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are both rated IP67, but that doesn’t mean they’re waterproof. Apple’s fine print indicates the phone should not be submerged in water (1 meter or deeper) for more than 30 minutes, which seems pretty obvious considering the entire unit is enclosed in glass.

If you want to be sure that your iPhone 7 has waterproof protection, then you shouldn’t solely rely on its IP67 rating. You can be certain that your iPhone 7 has IP68 rated water protection with Syncwire IPX8 Waterproof Bag. It comes with an adjustable strap, allowing you to wear it around your waist comfortably, and rest assured that it won’t be damaged when you take it deep into the water.

Is the iPhone 8 waterproof?

iPhone 8

The iPhone 8 was the latest iteration after iPhone 7 in Apple’s smartphone series. The device launched at the end of September 2017 with the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

Touting a glass and stainless steel design, the iPhone 8 features an all-new A11 Bionic chip, wireless charging capabilities, and a new camera system that includes portrait mode.

The phone has already proven to be one of Apple’s most popular models to date. In fact, it took just 22 days for Apple to sell the 10 millionth unit worldwide.

But is it waterproof?

The short answer is no. Just like its predecessor, the iPhone 8 is not waterproof but “water-resistant.” It is rated IP67 under IEC standard 60529 — which means it can withstand dust and dirt but not longer and deeper than 1-meter immersion in water.

You shouldn’t push your luck by submerging it in water or exposing it to high pressure. Apple places a warning on its website that reads, “Liquid damage is not covered under warranty.”

You can get away with some rain or snow exposure, but don’t let it sit in a bowl of water or drop it in a pool. Apple doesn’t provide any information about when the water-resistance starts to wear away.

Is the iPhone X waterproof?

iPhone X

Apple’s iPhone X was introduced in 2017 along with iPhone 8, and it’s packed with plenty of cool features. But is it waterproof?

The answer is no.

Apple has made a splash talking about the iPhone X’s new waterproof design, but the phone isn’t actually waterproof. It will survive being submerged in water for up to 30 minutes, but that doesn’t mean you should take it for a swim.

The company says “water-resistant” instead of waterproof because it doesn’t want to encourage people to purposely submerge their expensive new phones in water. Instead, Apple suggests that the “water-resistant” feature of the iPhone X is intended for people who drop their phones in sinks or toilets by accident and want to be protected against a “splash from the sink or a spill on the counter.”

When Apple says the iPhone X is “water-resistant,” it means that it’s protected against accidental exposure to water during everyday use. You can still get your phone wet — Apple warns that water damage isn’t covered under its warranty — and you shouldn’t try to intentionally submerge your phone in water.

Wondering if the iPhone XR is waterproof?

Just like iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 7, iPhone XR is also just “water-resistant.” It has an IP67 rating, which means it can offer a bit of water resistance. With time, this resistance power may wear away. So it can be said that its water-resistance after the first few months might not remain as strong as in the earlier days of coming out of the box.

Is the iPhone 11 waterproof?

Is iPhone 11 waterproof?

The iPhone 11 is not waterproof. As the tech specs page for the device states, it is only splash, water, and dust resistant.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone familiar with Apple’s mobile products. Most of the company’s devices are designed to be water and dust-resistant, but they are not designed to withstand submersion in water for longer than 30 minutes and deeper than six meters. The iPhone 11 does have an IP68 rating, meaning it can handle repeated contact with “liquid” in up to 2 meters of water for up to half an hour without sustaining damage.

Is the iPhone 12 waterproof?

Do you have an iPhone 12 and wonder if the iPhone is waterproof or not? Well, it’s “water-resistant” like its predecessors. No phone ever made by Apple is waterproof.

The iPhone 12 has an IP68 rating, which means it can withstand being submerged in up to six meters of water for 30 minutes. It’s enough to keep your handset safe from accidental spills and splashes.

Is the iPhone 13 waterproof?

iPhone 13

If you have an iPhone 13 and are wondering if the iPhone is waterproof or not, here’s the answer.

The iPhone 13 is a water-resistant device. You can use it in the rain and wash off dirt with water. However, you should not put the device on top of or close to the water while you are swimming or diving. It’s not waterproof enough to keep the harmful water away when the phone is submerged in water.

With the launch of the iPhone 13 and Apple Watch Series 5, many fans are wondering whether their new devices are water-resistant and how they can take full advantage of that feature. The two new models were revealed in San Francisco to a crowd of eager customers, who were treated to a performance by musicians including Janelle Monáe and Pharrell Williams.

Towards the end of the event, Apple CEO Tim Cook introduced a video that showed off some of the newest features available on the iPhone 13 and Apple Watch Series 5. In the clip, Cook notes that there are no ports or openings for water to get into these new devices — in other words, they should be completely waterproof.

You’d certainly want to take your iPhone 13 deep under the water and capture stunning shots with its powerful camera. Well, you’ve got your wish fulfilled with Syncwire Floatable Waterproof Phone Pouch IPX8. It lets you take your phone up to 30 meters deep in water.

Some ways to protect your iPhone from water damage

Water damage can be the most frustrating thing that can happen to your iPhone. You don’t want your precious iPhone to be in that condition, so here are some ways to help you avoid this from happening, or if it does happen then how to fix it.

Where should you keep your phone when it’s raining?

Do not keep your iPhone in your pocket as it might get wet on the outside of your pants. The best place would be in a bag or in an umbrella sleeve.

How do I protect my phone from getting wet?

IP67 and above-rated smartphones are supposed to be able to resist moisture, but they aren’t waterproof, so you’ll need to take precautions.

One of the first things you can do is get a case for your cellular phone, or even a waterproof case if you’re going to be using it near water often.

Cases aren’t that expensive and they can really help protect your cellular phone from getting damaged due to water damage. Another option is to put your phone in a plastic baggie before it gets wet; just make sure you seal the bag properly.

Here are some of the tips you can use to protect your phone from water damage if it has spent a long time in the water.

  • The Hair Dryer

If you dropped your phone in water, stayed there for longer than 30 minutes, and isn’t working now, you can consider using a hairdryer to get rid of moisture quickly.

If you are going to use a hairdryer to save your cell phone from water damage, make sure that you do so within 24 hours of dropping the device in water. Soaking wet devices can corrode very quickly and become unusable within 24 hours after being submerged in water. You’ll also want to blow air on both sides of the device because there may be moisture trapped between the cracks of your phone.

The problem with this method is that the heat can ruin your device so make sure to provide moderate heat only.

  • Rice or Silica Gel Packets

Even though this is somewhat of an old wives’ tale, it might be worth trying. According to many tests, leaving your phone in a bag of uncooked rice (or silica gel packets) overnight can help dry out the device enough to get it working again. There are also specialized containers out there made specifically for storing wet phones.

  • Waterproof Pouches

The best bet against water damage is to use waterproof pouches.

The pouches will help keep your phone dry so pool parties or beach vacations will not have to end because you need to use your phone. Not everyone wants to carry their cell phone when they are swimming or surfing, but if you want to be able to carry it around without worrying about damaging it then this option is for you.

These pouches are great for keeping your phone dry at all times. They also provide added protection from scratches and cracks as well as any damage from dropping a phone onto concrete.

You may want to consider the best available waterproof pouches for your iPhone. If so, then Syncwire’s Waterproof Pouches are ideal for you.

Final Thoughts

We realized that there’s a lot of misconception going around about how water resistant the iPhone actually is. Thus, we decided to make this blog which explains how water-resistant iPhones are, what their capabilities are, and helps you decide if you can take your iPhone into the water with you or not.

Hopefully, now you know if the iPhone is waterproof or not. If you are going to use your phone in the rain or get it wet in other ways, it makes sense to protect your investment with Syncwire’s Waterproof Pouches. Remember, prevention is always better than the cure!
